Makalji Aboriginal Arts and Craft

Traditionally weaving was used for many of things such as making baskets, fish nets, mats, carry bags and so much more. Weaving has been a beneficial tool used to gather, yarn, get creative. Weaving is a therapeutic method that teaches us patience, mindfulness, perseverance, the ability to make decisions, self-awareness, visualization and creative problem solving. It allows us to experiment with different colours, patterns and materials.

Biography

Biography

I am a Mitakoodi woman, with connections to Waanyi, Gangalidda and Djaru people. As children we were introduced to many of cultural activities, however it was weaving and jewellery making that really captured my interests.

Many of my elders provided us with the opportunities to engage and keep us connected to our culture. I come from a family of great teachers, my passion it to keep our culture strong and continue on teaching.

When I became a mother, that's when I realised the importance of gathering together and crafting, that's where my passion grew founder.
